my boyfriend has a constant stabbing pain on his right side between the botton of his ribcage and his hip. he says it feels like gas but the pain is really bed. what might this be and should we think about going to emergency?

I can understand your boyfriend 's situation and problem.
Throbbing pain on right side can be due to pneumonia, pleural effusion or musculoskeletal causes.
So better to first rule out lung related causes. So get done chest x ray. If chest x ray is normal then no need to worry for lung diseases.
Musculoskeletal pain can be the cause for his Throbbing pain.
So ask him to avoid heavyweight lifting, strenuous exercise. Avoid movements causing pain and bad postures during sleep.
Warm water pad application on affected area is also beneficial in this case.
Painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs are also effective.
So better to visit emergency room and get done chest x ray to rule out major lung causes.
