What Could Be The Reason For Having Vomiting, Nausea, Stomach Aches And Headaches?

Hi I have a daughter who has bee ill for the past 2 and half years, starting with stomach ache, then serious pain and nausea and vomiting, she had a ulcer in her duedenum and chronic gastritis, no h pylori bacteria, all bloods clear, put on gastric medication to reduce acid....nothing helped, couldnt sleep, chronic fatigue, weakness in arms and legs, still very nauseated, headaches at the back of the head, she went into hospital for Intra cranial pressure which is ok although she has chiari 1 malformation....Doc doesnt think that her symptoms are related to chiari 1 but nothing else is showing up....she has bruising at the back of the right eye which suggests high pressure at some stage ??? she continues to be nauseous and weak every day for the past two andhalf years, she was sent for counselling, and even not being believed by some of the doctors that something was wrong with her, she has missed so much school. I am waiting to talk to my neurosurgeon again but i think he doesnt believe that chiari is the problem.....can you help me, she is now 13 years old and tries so hard to do daily activites but unable to. it is heartbreaking to watch and no one able to help her, she has seen gastrologist, endocronoligist, and various docs over the years. thank you. Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The Chiari type I malformation usually presents

: age around 20-30 years
: pain in back of neck, head which may radiate to shoulders.
: tingling sensation in all extremities.
: neck flexion causes aggravation of symptoms
: neurological deficit like weakness in limbs, muscle atrophy in hands can occur if there is "syrinx". It is dilation of Central canal of spinal cord with gradual damage of spinal cord.

Now coming to your daughter symptoms, she is having chronic gastric ulcer symptoms like pain abdomen, vomiting etc and another set of symptoms like neck pain, weakness of limbs, fatigue. The second set of symptoms could be due to "Chiari malformation". It can be confirmed by neurological examination, MRI of spine to know about syrinx and "Phase contrast" MRI to know about degree of compression.

Treatment of Chiari can be given after confirming it as the cause of symptoms. If it is the cause, decompression of for amen magnum should give her relief, if it is done within 1 year of symptoms.

Hope it will help her. Continue her chronic gastritis and ulcer medication.

Thanks. Take care
