What Could Be The Cause For Knee Pain With A Medical History Of Compound Fracture?

I had a compound fracture of the tib/fib with compression syndrome 20 years ago. I have had pain in my leg since then. I am now getting pain in my knee. sometimes to the point of not being able to move the leg (lockup). I cannot have a MRI because the rod & bolts were never removed. What could be the problem?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From your description, I suspect that you might have developed SECONDARY degenerative changes in the knee joint following a severe injury 20 years back.

An Arthroscopic examination of the knee joint will reveal the status of the intraarticular structures like meniscus, cruciate ligaments, articular surfaces etc. Damage to any of these structures may produce pain as well as limitation of movement.

So, I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
