What Could Mitral Valve Leakage Diagnosis With Increased Heart Rate And Belching Indicate?

Monday i had a high blood pressure episode (racing heart, dry mouth, dizzy, nausea). I hurried to family doctor. Echo showed leaking mitral valve and cardiologist out of town till next week. Family doc put me on high blood pressure med and i go for cholesterol check in 2wks. The past few days i have been belching very often? Is this normal? Is this serious? Im 30yrs old, 6ft tall, 220lbs.

hello.I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM.
first of all as you had high blood pressure, you have been rightly advised to start BP medicine.I need to know exact report of your echo.what is severity of leakage of mitral valve, how is mitral valve structurally and what is the cause of leakage?I can guide you properly only if i know these details.your belching may not be related to this.
my best wishes

Cardiologist Dr. Ilir Sharka's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for asknig on HCM!

I understand your concern, and would like to explain that when dealing with mitral valve leaking the two most important clues to investigate are whole mitral valve apparatus morphology and the severity of mitral regurgitation.

If only a trivial (minimal to mild) mitral regurgitation is present and no abnormal mitral valve morphology is identified (by cardiac ultrasound), then there is nothing to worry about. in such a case, only a periodic medical follow up by echo is sufficient.

In such case your recent complains (racing heart, dizzy, nausea, etc) are caused by a transitory hyperkinetic state associated with high blood pressure. You just need to keep monitoring your blood pressure frequently and perform some routine blood tests (complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, liver and renal function tests, blood electrolyte levels, fasting blood glucose, etc) and discuss with your doctor about the results.

Otherwise, if mitral valve insufficiency is more than mild (by echo), then a more close medical follow up and possibly an ongoing therapy would be advicalbe (taking into account also your possible clinical symptomatology).

If belching is persistently present then a dietary modification coupled with any antiflatulent and antisecretor gastric drugs would be of help. You need to discuss with your GP about this issue.

So, to conclude I would recommend to keep being close with your doctor and clarify all the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful! Greetings! Dr. Iliri
