What Could I Do Having Degenerative Disk Disease Undergoing Lot Of Stress And Lower Left Quadrant Of Heart Is Damaged?

I think I have a problem with flour. Can too many carbs cause joint pain. I notice when I stay under 20 carbs a day that I am almost pain free. I am disabled due to degenerative disk disease and I get tired of taking things for pain along the lines of narcotics. I am 45 years old and the mother of three grown children and I do not feel like I will be able to keep up with grand babies. I have to use scooters in stores and this embarrasses me very much. I am a recovering alcoholic of 9 months and I quit smoking 7 months ago. I have been diagnosed with heart disease last week. My heart doctor says I need to loose 60 pounds and so far in the last two weeks I have lost 13. My heart doctor told me to do the Atkins program and since carbs are gone my pain is so much better. Am I imagining things or is some of my pain due to gluten. I had weight loss surgery 12 years ago. I lost 130 pounds and still have off 112 pounds. My chemical stress test came back fine. My heart scan showed some damage in the lower left quadrant but they said is was not enough to worry about. Four years ago they told me I had 25% blockages in my heart. My cholesterol is 224 and they have started me on a med to lower it. I battle severe mental illness and I im hospitalized sometimes twice a year with my bipolar. I can become dangerous to my self and others until they change my medicines around. Now that im not drinking my meds are working the way they should. Because of Obama care our regular insurance is going to go up another 200$ a month. We are not wealthy people. My husband is an over the road truck driver and I am a retired CNA. I have live in help with me to make sure I have someone with me if I become MANIC and to keep track of my meds so I do not take and overdose. My extreme pain does seem better on the low carb diet and I really want to know If im imagining this or is it really true because if it is I will never eat another piece of bread or pasta again. Who ever you are and wherever you live doc. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year from the Lundell's in Staunton Illinois. May God Bless you and your family.

Hi Lundell ! Good evening and merry christmas to you as well with a happy new year from this side. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

As you have mentioned in between, the gluten in some of the carbohydrates, and specially in the fast foods could have given rise to the joint pains in your case. If you have got relief in your symptoms after excluding this component in your diet, I would advise you to continue with this strategy in consultation with a dietician.

It is good to learn that you have left your alcohol, and smoking. I hope you would continue with this abstinence which will help you in the long run. Please take care not to omit any medications prescribed to you by your psychiatrist.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
