What Causes Yellow Drainage From Stitches Under The Left Breast?

I had a breast reduction 4 days ago. My stitches under my left breast have continued to leak since the operation. It s a yellow fluid with the consistency or water. There s no smell to it and the area around the leak doesn t hurt or look swollen or infected, but should I be worried?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

This would be termed serous drainage.'It is normal to have at least a small amount of serous drainage present. It occurs as part of the body's inflammatory response to trauma. If it is excessive (that is soaking or almost soaking the bandage) or prolonged, then there may be a problem present, that is an infection. If it is excessive, then you should be seen to rule out infection.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
