What Causes White Spots On The Fingers When Washed With Vinegar?

Aloha, my wife just got done painting some baseboards in one of our rooms. She had been painting other rooms all week with no issues... until today. The paint is water soluble latex type paint. She wears latex gloves. After painting, she cleaned her hands with water. Then she used vinegar to clean one of her rings and that s when some white spots appeared on her left thumb and index finger. The spots (and the area around the spots) burned/tingled for a while. The small spots look as if a thumb of finger brushed up against some wet paint, but the spots won t wash off. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Latex paint using vinyl acrylic is the most popular paint ingredient.
The binders are made from synthetic resins of polyvinyl acetate and styrene butadiene and other synthetic binders.
Latex paint may stain when contaminated with a water-soluble mixture like vinegar consisting mainly of acetic acid (CH3COOH) and water.
The spots won't wash off but will gradually lighten and eventually disappear with the shedding of epidermal cells.
In normal skin, the rate of keratinocyte production equals the rate of loss, taking about two weeks for a cell to journey from the stratum basale to the top of the stratum granulosum, and an additional four weeks to cross the stratum corneum (outer most layer of skin). The entire epidermis is replaced by new cell growth over a period of about 48 days.
