What Causes White Patches In Skin?

Hello,I have a question about some small white patches/dots of skin. It started about two years ago after I returned from a tour in Baghdad Iraq. At first it was just a couple of small white blotches ( about the size of a pea) on and around my upper back/shoulders. Since then the patches of blotches have increased in size and become more concentrated. In some spots it looks like I have lost all pigmentation ( about size of a open palm). The patches have also spread further down my back, across my deltoids and down upper arms / outer biceps. The spots look like I have lost my pigmentation and it is more noticeable when I get a tan ( the affected areas won't tan like the rest of my skin). The spots are not raised, itchy or cause any pain/discomfort. I did some research and it looks like mild cases of "vitiligo"' however I have no spots on my face, hands, lips ect... Like the symptoms suggest. However, I have expereienced some of the possible causes i.e. high level of stress both mental and physical, heat rashes on my back on a fairly regular basis. This is all mainly due to my job requirement in the army. After asking my parents my mother told me that her mother experienced vitiligo for most of her adult life, and that it could be hereditary.I mainly want to know if it is harmful, what should I do about it / who should I see i.e. dermatologist ect...<brThankyou

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for posting on HCM
The condition you have described is called Pityriasis versicolor, a superficial skin infection caused by a fungus.
I would recommend you take short course of oral antifungal drug like fluconazole as advised by your dermatologist.
Apply ketoconazole cream twice a day over the white patches regularly.
Use shampoo containing ketoconazole and selenium sulfite for rinsing daily.
Maintain hygiene.
Hope you will get fine soon
Thank you
