What Causes Weight Gain While Taking Paxil Cr And Abilify?

I m currently on Paxil cr and abilify. I ve gained about 40-50 pounds since I ve been on them. I asked my dr. To start weaning me off of the abilify. Do you think I will start loosing the weight. I ve heard that the abilify really causes weight gain. Hopefully just with the Paxil I will be better. Help!!!

Thanks for posting your question to Health Care Magic website,

Paroxetine (Paxil) is an antidepressant medication used for treatment of some psychological disorders such as major depression, obsessive-compulsive, panic, posttraumatic stress (PTSD), and occasionally for treatment of night sweat in menopause process. Side effects of Paxil comprise gastrointestinal problems such as dry mouth and also sleep disorders, etc.

Aripiprazole (abilify) is an antidepressant medication used for treatment of some psychological disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Side effects contain less extrapyramidal effects, weight gain, dizziness, prolactin, drowsiness when comparing with some other typical antidepressants.

Please notice that suspension of these two medications may cause withdrawal symptoms including psychological disorders such as agitation, inducing schizophrenia like signs, etc.

My recommendation are:

1.     According to instructions posted by you, it seems your treatment with these two medication could potentially limit your psychological problems, meaning that as much as possible to attempt to keep this treatment (under supervision of your doctor and psychologist).

2.     Try to reduce your weight with appropriate formulae for your daily food intake, and nutrition. Use high fiber foods and low calorie dishes. Perform plenty physical activity to lose weight.

3.     Given that you have done all activities demanded to lose weight normally and you face to weight gain once again or not losing your extra heaviness, I suggest you to ask your psychologist for medication substitution.

Hope you feel better soon,

Regards
