What Causes Watery Stools Despite Taking Loperamide?

Hello, I am a 27 yo male who had food poisoning saturday afternoon. I started getting symptomes around 9PM and vomited and had diarrhea every half hour all night. Around 4AM, I took a single 4mg Zofran and stopped vomiting. I sipped gatorade and water and kept it down and started to feel better, but the diarrhea continued. It slowed to about once every 2 hours on Sunday and Monday and I began to eat pretzels, yogurt, bananas, and tortilla chips. Today around noon, I took 2 2mg loperamide tablets per the instructions after a watery stool and 2 more after 2 stools that occured 20 min apart. Recently, my stools have become almost pure water and once every 10-15 minutes! What can I do now? Help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear, welcome to HCM and thanks for choosing us.

I share your concerns as you have to suffer from diarrhoea for long, but I would say that treatment you have received is inadequate. You have taken anti vomiting tablet and loperamide, which controls your symptoms but don't kill the causative organism of diarrhoea.

You should take a course of antibiotics (ciproflox tinidazole) for three to five days. Meanwhile keep taking anti vomiting tablet. Avoid loperamide. Keep taking plenty of water and oral rehydration solutions. You will be fine soon.

I hope my reply will benefit you. I wish you rapid recovery and good health. Take care in future. Don't eat outside food. Please write to hcm for follow up queries. Thank you.
