What Causes Vomiting Up Of Blood And Pain After A Colon Resection Surgery?

My friend had a colon resection surgery and some kind of a resection of parts of the liver due to cancer 2days ago, everything seems to be ok and he was transfer from ICUs to another general area, but today he started vomiting blood and having so much pain. So he is taking some medication to control nausea and morphine. Could you please explain me what is happening and what can I do?

Hello

Thanks for asking query in healthcaremagic. As I understand your friend has been diagnosed with colon cancer with probable liver mets, who underwent surgery - colon and liver resection, today is post op day 3. In this scenario, causes of blood vomiting could be - stress injury to stomach, coagulopathy, drug induced (heparin or NSAIDs),peptic ulcer or other rarer causes. He needs evaluation by gastroenterologist in terms of blood loss and cause. After initial tests and treatment he may advice him for upper GI endoscopy for evaluation.

Hope for early recovery.
