What Causes Varied Gestational Ages In Ultrasound Reports Taken At The Same Time?

My wife was prescribed to take siphene table for conceiving and it was taken for 5 days from Jan 31st and after that HCG injection was given on Feb 9th. My wife is conceive now and we have took couple of scans to check for heart beat and size of the baby. While giving input for the scans we have been asked to provide mensus date and not the fertility date which was given on Feb 9th.. The scan reports by (bharat scan and mediscan chennai) says babies is 7weeks and 4days old and another scan report says 6weeks and 5days . We including doctor aren t able to understand why the report was provided like this in different dates and both report says no heart beat found and suggested for abortion. .. My clarification is , do we need to provide the HCG date when it was injected or do we need to provide menstruation date while taking scans? How do we calculate date for these ? But if we calculate date based on HCG injection, it falls under 4week and 5days which means definitely no heart beat will be heard. Experts please advice.. Period date : Jan 29th

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Ideally, the gestational age should be calculated based on last mensteual period. It is reliable, at least during the 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Sometimes, ultrasound report could vary from one place to another as the doctor performing it might interpret the scan images little differently. There could be difference of +/- 1 week.
In any case, you should now focus more towards viability of pregnancy, which would be indicated by appearance of cardiac activity in the fetus. Most often, it is picked about 8 to 10 weeks of gestation. Kindly get another scan done after a week to look particularly for heart beat.
Depending on that, you could plan the next move in consultation with your doctor.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
