What Causes Vaginal Spotting Post A Hysterectomy?

I am 46 yrs old, a female, who had my uterus removed abt 5 yrs ago. I have pelvic and rectal prolapse. I recently have experienced vaginal spotting. It worsens after intercourse, but also happens without sex. I m just wondering what could be causing this and if I should go to a doctor Thanks, Sheila

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you fortrusting HealthcareMagic

Possible causes.for vaginal spotting include atrophic vaginitis(due to lack of estrogen seen in menopause), vaginal infection, vaginal polyps/tumors, cervical polyp/tumor(if cervix was not removed with hysterectomy).

Vaginal spotting should not be taken lightly and requires vaginal/pelvic examination, vaginal swab microscopy and culture. Depending on the result of pelvic examination, further investigations will be needed.

Please be advised to follow up with your gynecologist to undergo necessary evaluation.

Hope this answers your question
