What Causes Vaginal Bleeding And Pain During Intercourse?

The past two times I have had intercourse with my husband I have had bleeding. My period finished about 10 days ago, so I am not close to another cycle yet. The last time I bled a lot and there were fleshy pieces in the blood which really concerned me, these were not blood clots, but looked like flesh. I also experience some dull pain during intercourse that is similar in location to where mestrual cramping originates, but the pain is slightly different than cramping and subsides shortly after intercourse stops. I am worried about cervical cancer being a possibility and I will be going to a doctor to request an examination this week, but I m hoping you can give me some insight first?

Dear friend,

You have got two symptoms which may be discussed separately.

The bleeding after and during intercourse is indeed a symptom of concern. Usually such bleeding takes place for some lesions on the mouth of the uterus; i.e. cervix. The first diagnosis which have to be ruled out is, as you have correctly mentioned, cervical cancer. The cervical cancerous tissue is highly friable, beaks on touch and hence the bleeding after intercourse. The tissue expelled out with this bleeding is also suggesting of cervical cancer. However, severe chronic infection also has to be kept in mind as differential diagnosis. I had few such cases in whom, after clinical examination, I was almost 95% sure about cervical cancer, however after biopsy, they turned out to be chronic infection and were cured completely by antibiotics only.

Your other symptom of pain in lower abdomen, particularly dull aching pain during intercourse suggests that the uterus/Ovaries are tender. Pressure of penis on them during intercourse gives such pain. Some mass in the space behind the uterus also may give such pain. This mass can be anything, infection, endometriosis, secondaries of cancer, etc. However, for such huge mass of cervical cancer to grow in that place the cancer has to be long standing with symptoms like post coital bleeding for quite a period.

I would advise you to report this to a Gynaecologist, get thoroughly examined and biopsy done, if needed.

I would be keen on knowing the update, if you do not mind. You can contact me by asking a direct question of sending me email on nishikants@gmail.com.
