Hallow Dear,

I hope, you must have taken Tab. Mifepristone followed by Tab. Misoprostol. These medicines are very effective and it seems they have effected your abortion. Since after the abortion process, the bleeding has stopped, mostly your abortion is complete. However, if you are getting intermittent red coloured discharge, following could be the possibilities:

1. The abortion could be incomplete and some small pieces of the tissues related to the baby might be still remaining inside the uterus. This can be confirmed by ultrasonography. If it is incomplete abortion, the tissues inside the uterine cavity will have to be removed by curetting/evacuation.

and/or

2. Infection. If there are some tissues left inside the uterus, they get infected and start having bleeding and/or foul smelling discharge. The infection may result due to unhygienic practices also. Infection will have to be treated with the appropriate antibiotic.

3. Very rarely after the medical abortion the little bleeding may trickle for few days. Usually, it does not happen after medical abortion.

Please report to your Gynaecologist to look for the first two causes which if present do require prompt intervention to avoid further threatening complications. If no such abnormal complication is noted and the bleeding is negligible, you may be advised to just observe the discharge and report if the bleeding increases. However, if the amount of the bleeding is considerable without any tissue inside the uterus and no signs of infection, you may be given some medicines to contract the uterus which will control the bleeding.

I hope this helps you.
