What Causes Urination Difficulty After Total Knee Replacement?
my husband had a total knee replacement on Dec 13 and has not been able to urinate. He has had a catheter on an off and cannot urinate when it is out. We are told this is fairly common after this surgery but we are worried and of course the surgeon is away for the holidays. He is not moving about as much as he was told he would be by now, and having trouble with pain management. Could all these be factos and should a specialist be called in at this point?
We see this commonly after orthopedic procedures. The combination of anasthesia, pain pills and inability to move around makes the bladder week. Typically we leave the catheter in until he is off of pain pills and moving around well. When we take the catheter out at this time, the chance of success is greater. He should also be on a medicine called flomax to help relax the prostate if he is not already.
