What Causes Urinary Tract Infection?
My husband has been told his UTI is caused from e coli in his urine. We have no idea how he got this when I asked the nurse when they called was told they did not know what may have cause it and the urine was sent off for a culture. He is allergic to all cipro drugs and sulfa drugs. He is taking doxycycline and was told this should take care of infection. This is the second infection since June.

=Recurrent urinary tract infection is not common in males. In case of repeated infections, besides treating the infection, we should look for the cause.
Investigations suggested are;
1- Renal ultrasound to look for renal stones or enlarged prostate. Both predispose to infection in males.
2- Blood glucose. Diabetes is associated with lowered immunity and thus recurrent infections.
= Antibiotic choice is determined by the culture results. He should take the most effective antibiotic after exclusion of those he is allergic to.
= Good hydration is also advised for UTI.
