What Causes Upper Abdominal Pain While Suffering From An Incisional Hernia?

My husband is 52 years old and has a incisional hernia. He has had it for about a year and a half it has been getting larger and poking out, but it never bothered him other than the looks of it. About 3 days ago he started having a sharp pain in his upper abdominal area. What does this mean?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Well incisional hernia occurs due to a defect in our musculature. The new complaint you are mentioning, that is sharp pain may be due to obstruction of the bowel which is not good, as he is 52 years old it may be a direct hernia which is common in that age group and you did not mention the location of hernia it would be better if you go for herniotomy which is removal of the hernia, where they reduce the contents of hernia and put a mesh made of polypropylene to prevent such recurrence and obstructional hernia may lead to strangulation of hernia leading to death of bowel loops. So please hurry up and consult a surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suhas Chauhan
