What Causes Tightness In The Chest?

My husband is a 28 year old male suffering from a tight chest for years. He has never smoked before. The 1st GP we consulted diagnosed him with emphysema, the 2nd with pleurisy and now the 3rd one is treating him for asthma. He has never used a inhaler before but now he was given one to use. In some instances when he just drinks a glass of normal tap water then he can't breathe properly and even when he walks barefeet for not even 5 min, then his chest is extremely tight. Do we need to see a pulmonologist for a second opinion or what can we do. It is really freaking us out. Please Help.

Hello.

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make following suggestions to you:

1. Emphysema is very uncommon at 28 years of age.

2. Both emphysema and pleurisy can be diagnosed by simple chest X-ray.

3. Pleurisy can be treated and cured with appropriate course of antibiotics.

4. Asthma is common at his age. But only drinking water or walking 5 minutes causing difficulty is unusual.

So, in my opinion, it is best to consult a pulmonologist who will examine him may suggest him investigations like chest X-ray, Ultrasonogram or spirometry to reach to the diagnosis.

Once diagnosis is confirmed, appropriate treatment can be started.

Hope above suggestions will be help you & your husband.

Should you have any other query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish your husband the best of the health.

Thank you & Regards.
