What Causes Throat Irritation After Having Cold Foods?

I was recently diagnosed with severe asthma and was told I have the genetic marker for emphysema. My asthma is uncontrolled right now and I have much difficulty with breathing. But I m concerned about the discomfort I feel when I drink cold liquids or eat anything. It isn t chest pain or heartburn, but it hurts in that area. Is it related to my asthma and COPD?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Since you have asthma and COPD, it is better to avoid taking cold items.
In such respiratory conditions, both your upper and lower respiratory tract would be prone for inflammation and infection.
When you take cold items, it would precipitate such inflammation and and more prone for infection, leading to throat irritation and worsening of your existing condition.
Hence, it is strictly advisable to avoid cold items altogether.
Kindly take all the medications as prescribed for your conditions.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best and wish you good health.
