What Causes The Symptoms Of High Blood Pressure, Leg Pain And Weight Gain?

I have a friend that has recenlty had these symptoms. High blodd pressure, right leg pain and excessive weight gain. Shwas admitted to the hospital 4 days ago, was released yesterday. She was admitted because her bp was 160 / 140 and her herat rate was 132. She is 35 yrs old. They did a heart cath thinking she had a blockage, she didnt. They said her heart was great! They tested her kidneys today and said they were good too. She was told about amonth ago that her thyroid gland did not work right. However they told her that it had probably been like that for years, She has just recently been having the bp problems. She is very dizzy and light headed, ALOT! The drs around here seem to not find anything, but something has to be causeing it! What could it be?

Dietitian & Nutritionist 's  Response
Hello,
Your concern for your friend is admirable. Being dizzy and light headed can be caused by blood pressure fluctuating or being too high. What do you mean they told her that her thyroid had probably been that way forever. Who cares? Did they treat her for it? If her TSH is high she most likely needs thyroid replacement therapy and the nutrition to support it such as iodine. I suggest following the DASH diet to get her blood pressure and heart rate under control; the doctors should be monitoring b.p. meds if she is on any. The DASH diet limits sodium which can cause high blood pressure. It also helps people to lose weight if that is something they would like to do. Weight loss, if overweight, will also help with lowering the blood pressure. Dizziness might also be caused by dehydration. We need 1cc of water for every calorie we eat, so in general, we need 8-10 cups of pure water per day. I hope I have given you some ideas and with some luck, they may take care of the problem. Thank you for choosing our company. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
