What Causes Teeth Sensitivity To Hot And Cold Post Root Canal Treatment?

Hello. I had a root canal done on Monday. I could feel some pain during the cleaning of just one root. It is the tooth farthest back on the right hand side, closest to my wisdom tooth, that had the RC. I had 3 canals done, and it was the front canal that hurt every time the dentist touched it. He filled them and put a temporary filling in. The pain was about a 7 out of 10 when I went home. By Wednesday night, the pain was about a 10 out of 10. I am on antibiotics and now that the soreness has disappeared, I can tell you exactly where the pain remains. I can touch the tooth from the side but to touch the top of the filling, even very very gently with my finger or some water, it makes me want to hit the roof. Unbearable agony. I am not sensitive to hot or cold as I was before, but touch, oh my. I cannot eat, even on the other side of my mouth. Any ideas as to what may be going on? I have some swelling under my chin as well that started today.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain pain and sensitivity during the root canal treatment can be due to persistent infection..

When the infection in tooth is severe and root canal treatment is initiated, the infection does not immediately gets weaned off.
Other thing is that as you can still feel pain while cleaning of one of the canals it means that there is still living tissue present there which might be acting as a source of pain and infection..

As the temporary filling is done and the pus formation is still there due to infection it creates pressure inside leading to severe pain..

What you can do is to remove the filling from the tooth using a clean toothpick and the cotton dressing present inside and take a painkiller like Ketorol DT or Tramadol to get relief and can consult your dentist soon so that he can further clean the tooth under local anesthesia.

You should not get the final filling part done until you are convinced that you are totally painless.
Also ask your dentist to slightly reduce the tooth height to avoid contact with the opposing tooth which can initiate pain.

Take a complete course of antibiotics to kick off the infection.

Hope your query is solved..
