What Causes Swollen Vein In The Thighs?

I just noticed that a large vein that has been close to the surface and slightly raised for a long time in the inside of my right thighhas now apparently exploaded. It is now over an inch and a half in diameter, swollen and has darkened my upper thigh area. It's round, red, purple and blue. It's 9pm where I am. Do I have something to worry about?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi, the vein you are talking about is probably the Great Saphenous vein(GSV) which is responsible for Varicose veins. What you describe sounds like a clot or thrombosis in the GSV. You should see a Doctor and get a Doppler done to confirm the same. Doppler is a painless investigation like an Ultrasound. You might require surgery for the same or at least medication for the thrombosis. Your Doctor can decide after examining you. Till then, you should use some Compression bandage over it and warm compresses of there is pain. Take care,
