What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes In The Neck, Nasal Congestion And Throat Discomfort?

hi, i have swollen lymph nodes, discomfort in throat when swallowing, nasal congestion, pressure in head. The swollen lymph node is on my right side of neck and it is quite large. I went to the doctor, and he said i have a upper respiratory viral infection. He gave me cough syrup, pseudophed, and candies that numb the throat. How do i treat my nodes? Is it recommended to ice them?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain swollen lymph nodes are commonly seen when you have upper respiratory tract infection and as if is a viral infection, the virus will run its course and as the infection will subside the swelling of the lymph nodes will also reduce..

However there is a possibility that if there is secondary bacterial infection, then you might need a course of antibiotics for resolution..

You can do cool compresses over the lymph nodes for relief..

As of now you should take supportive treatment for the upper respiratory infection like:
-Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a luke warm solution..

-Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytic like Ambroxol and anti allergic levocetrizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen..

-Take cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin and cough suppressant containing Dextromethorphan.

-Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..

-Do steam inhalations..

-Avoid spicy and chilled foods..

-Sip on warm water throughout the day..

Hope this information helps..

Regards..
