What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes And Neck Pain?

my 21 yr old daughter is experiencing an illness that has lasted about 3 week. Started with a fever for 2.5 days and went into cold like symptoms as in runny nose and cough. Runny nose has persisted and became very painful, though nasal pain has subsided some but runny nose has persisted along with being very stuffed up. Four days ago neck and jaw became sore and lymph nodes in neck and jaw are swollen and tender. Has used otc Sudafed, nasal spray and ibuprophen to treat. Neck soreness has decreased some but still tender, nose is still stuffed and or runny and generally a run down feeling. Please advise, thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.

I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about your daughter.

The signs and symptoms of your daughter are suggestive of viral upper respiratory tract infection. Because of viral infection there is compromised mucosa erosion , sometimes provide a way for bacterial chronic infections like chronic sinusitis which seems to be there in case of your daughter.

The painful lymph node swelling is also because of that. As infection is continuously there it has lead the painful lympadenopathy. Tender painful lymph nodes are not dangerous and will heal as the infection heals with time. There is no need to worry about it much.

She must do saline gargles, take hot steam inhalations 2-3 times daily. You need to visit an ENT specialist and get a proper physical examination done and also the sensitive antibiotic therapy recommend.

Hope my answer will help you and you can write us again further in case you want need any further help.

Regards
Dr Muzaffer Hussain Parray.
