What Causes Swollen Gums, Tongue And Throat?

Yesterday I went to the horse races and ate some fish & Chips around 4:00pm and came home at 6:00. An hour later my gums swelled up....all of them. All my teeth and gums were very swollen. This has never happened before. So I took some aprin and went to bed. At 2 in the morning woke up and my throat and tongue was swollen. So I took 1 Tylenol codeine. Then went to bed and got up at 4:30 and took my last Tylenol Codeine. Finally got some sleep around 6. Got up at 9:00 and got some ice and iced my face, throat and ate some ice chips for my tongue. Swelling went down. Took some more Advil around 11:00 am and went back to bed. Got up at 2:00pm and felt good. Do you think it could have been a reaction to some fish & chips?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make following suggestions to you:

1. If you have not reacted to fish before, I would first think of histamine fish poisoning, a type of food poisoning which occurs doe to improper refrigeration of fish.

2. Second possibility I would think of is an allergic reaction to any ingredient used in fish or chips.

In both the cases, the primary treatment would have been almost same - an antihistamine like chlorpheniramine or hydroxyzine.

Hope above answer will be helpful to you.

Thank you & Regards.
