What Causes Swollen Ankles And Weight Gain While On Morphine?
I m a 56 year old woman with orthopedic issues and a cervical fusion that resulted in a medication pump being implanted in 2012. r Recently I have swelling of the ankles and have gained weight that does not seem to match my calorie intake. Could this be a reaction to the medication ( morphine) that is in the pump?
Hi Swollen ankles may be a side effect of morphine.Possible causes of swollen ankles also included edema, medications like morphine,injuries,heart/kidney/liver diseases, lymphedema, blood clots or standing up for long...Morphine however is a central nervous system acting pain medication and not an anti-inflammatory and may not help reduce the swelling if it is of inflammatory origin. The exact cause of the swollen ankles will best be investigated by a Doctor with some objective work-ups. Weight gain while on morphine is a described side effect.Morphine causes drowsiness/sleepiness and at times may render you less active resulting in net energy gain even when you do not take much energy foods and as a result, weight gain. In short, morphine causes swollen legs and weight gain and may explain all your symptoms. However, i will advise other possible causes be excluded.Visiting the Doctor will be a good step to take. Hope my answer will help you Best regards
