What Causes Swelling Under Eyes?

Recently I have gotten remarkable swelling under my eyes, not the type associated with being tired but very red liquid-like puffs that are incredbily itchy. It has been both eyes and/or one. Threw out all the expensive new eye creams - still occurring. Could this be a sign of illness or more likely an allergic reaction? Also not on side of face usually sleep on when just one eye. Lastly, area subsequently scabs after a day, takes 3-5 days to heal.
