What Causes Swelling On The Face, hands And Arm?

Hi doctor. 3 weeks ago my 9yr old daughter woke up with a swelling on half side of her face and swelling to her hand and arm. I gave her piriton that day thinking it was maybe an insect bite. The following day she became worse i took her to a&e i she was given steroid tablets and piriton to be taken for 5 days. The doctor had suspected an allergic reaction to something. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thank you for posting.

I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns.

The symptoms that your daughter is experiencing are related to angioneurotic oedema(Angioedema). Angioedema is the rapid swelling of the dermis(skin), subcutaneous tissue.
Angioedema can be allergic or hereditary.
Sometimes it is considered as a medical emergence.

The diagnosis is determined by the symptoms. But routine tests are necessary:
1. Complete blood count.
2. Blood test(electrolytes level and complement factor C4).
3. Liver function test.
4. Urine test.

In the most common cases Cetirizine is recommended.

Consult an allergist for the treatment.

I hope this information is helpful.

All the best.
Dr. Behar.
