What Causes Swelling On The RHS Of The Operated Knee?

Hi there, I have a query relating to my right knee. I had an ACL reconstruction in 2000. The patellar ligament was applecored and grafted and all was well. 2 years later I suffered a bucket handle tear in my medial meniscus which led to more surgery this time trimming my cartilage. 11 years on and I am feeling ok, but have recently been suffering from swelling on the RHS of the operated knee. I also have noticed over the past year that I've developed a small hard lump towards the base of the knee cap, it's not hurting, however I would like to know what it might be. Calcium maybe? One final thing, I also have what feels like an indentation in the top of my shin bone running around 2.5 cms down the front outer side. I am still actively playing sport and have little pain, but the slight swelling is concerning me a little.

Thanks.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi thanks for the query.

From the details you had provided it could be some sort of bursitis or osteophyte developing over the base of the knee cap. The pain over the right hand side of the knee could be due to some form of wear and tear inside the knee.
I would like you to get an x ray of your knee. The indentation on the shin bone could be sometime due to wasting of the muscles of the leg causing your shin bone to look more prominent.

thank you
