What Causes Swelling Of Lips?

Looking for possible cause and remedy for swelling of lips with what appears to be pitikia on the inside of both upper and lower lips. Issue began when crown on tooth broke off...gum began to swell and became painful. Have been taking 500mg Amoxicillin daily for approximately 1 week. Swelling and pain of gums has been alieviated but lips have now developed the (assumed) petikia and burn when tongue is pressed against inside of lower lip. There is now a cluster of 2-3 small bumps under tongue where it is attached to lower mouth area. This limits ability to extend tongue to upper portion of upper lip (between lip and teeth).

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems that the swelling on lips and small bumps under the tongue has occurred as a side effect of taking the antibioticswhich you have taken for tooth infection and pain..

It has occurred as a side effect of amoxicillin and will take some time to disappear as the medicine is now withdrawn..

You can take allegra or benadryl which are antihistamines and will help in reducing swelling..
In case of pain anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen can be taken..
Salt water rinses can be helpful..
Gargle with 1:1 solution of benadryl and milk of magnesia will help..
Sucking ice pops will be helpful..
Apply numbing gel on the sores like oragel for relief during eating..
Avoid hot and spicy food..
Do not suck or put pressure on lips..
Ice packs over the lips will help in reducing swelling..

Hope this information helps..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptoms you mention are clearly indicating a condition known as canker sore .There can be many reasons for occurrence of canker sore but in your case it seems to me that irritation from the broken crown is reason behind there occurrence . Compromised immunity aggravates your condition.

I would suggest you to :-

- Rinse the area with 1 teaspoon of baking soda in half glass of warm water .

- Avoid spicy acidic and hot food .

- Apply ice pact 2-3 times a day .

- Maintain proper oral hygiene .

If condition doesn't get better in a week then consult dentist . Doctor may examine properly .

Doctor may prescribe orabase gel , steroid ointment or orally or sucralfate drug .

Doctor may also repair the crown properly or give new crown .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
