What Causes Swelling Of Face With No Other Complications?

My mother in law who is 93 occassionally has a terrible swelling of her face. Lips almost turn inside out. She has to be rushed to the hospital for a shot. It does not effect her breathing. After the shot of cortisone and benadryl by mouth she gets over it. I think this has happened about 3 times in the last 2 years. We can never determine any reason. She is basically house bound. One nurse mentioned it may be urticaria, but it is not like hives at all she just swells.. mostly in her face.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It may be angiodedema which is swelling of the skin and subcutaneous tissues.

It is most often caused by an allergy but can also occur as a side effect of medications eg ACE inhibitors.

You can consider speaking to her doctor to determine the source of her reaction.

I hope this helps
