What Causes Swelling In Uvula After Removal Of Tonsils?

I had my tonsils removed today and my uvula was stuck backward to the top of my mouth. It just came loose and seems to be a lot longer and more swollen than normal. It reminds me of a maraschino cherry but normal flesh color. Is this normal after surgery?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns.

As per your complain swelling and bigger appearance of uvula seems to be secondary to tonsillectomy and it is a relatively normal finding as there is inflammation in the area of surgery that can also lead to swelling..
Nothing to worry about it as gradually when the healing will proceed the inflammation and swelling will subside and the uvula will come to normal size..
You should take a soft diet with more of liquids..
Take the medications like antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers as advised by the surgeon..
Taking Ibuprofen or Naproxen can help in relieving inflammation and pain..
Do warm saline gargles..
Avoid spicy foods and maintain a good oral hygiene..
In case if after about ten days to two weeks after the surgery also you do not find improvement then you need consulting your surgeon and get evaluated..
As of now nothing seems abnormal or serious and the symptoms are normal presentation of infection..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
