What Causes Swelling In The Vein Where The IV Was Given?
my father had hernia repair surgery about a month ago, and now he has a bumpy texture to the vein in his hand where his IV was located. The vein feels somewhat hard and very bumpy when you run your finger across it. Just wondering what might cause this or if it is anything serious?
The most common cause of this is thrombophlebitis, or inflammation of the vein. This is very common after IV insertion, and is not serious. The treatment for this is warm compresses and NSAID's such as ibuprofen. It may be that the vein has clotted off, and whats left is scar. If this has happened, there isn't anything to do about it, and it is not serious at all. I wouldn't worry about it.
I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
