What Causes Swelling In The Tonsils?

I m a 42 year old female and recently had a bout of what was believed to be strep throat. The urgent care Dr thought my tonsil as very swollen at which time I told her I didn t have any - they were removed as a child. Nearly 6 months later, I still have that tonsil on one side, other side clear. A photo of my throat is varied in color, tint of green/yellow/white, swollen and one tonsil. What is concern! level for cancer?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
Swollen tonsil can be caused by a variety of common viruses and bacteria, such as streptococcal bacteria, which causes strep throat.
Some advices that I can give to you are :
-Get enough rest
-Drink warm or very cold fluids to ease throat pain
-Eat smooth foods, such as flavored gelatins, ice cream, or applesauce
-Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in your room
-Gargle with warm salt water
-Suck on lozenges containing benzocaine or other anesthetics
-Take pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
-Take antibiotics for 7 to 14 days such ashort augmentine 625 mg.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
