What Causes Swelling In The Knee After Injury?

I was coming out of an elevator yesterday and apparently it did not level out. I went to exit, tripped and fell right knee first onto the floor. My knee was bleeding on the out side, a scrape and it did hurt, my upper body nothing. Now today, the swelling has signficantly gone down in my right knee, but now my upper body on the left side in the back and under arm area hurts and I fell on my right side. Can a fall like that cause a person to fell pain all over even if they fell on one side of their body?

Hello.

Yes, a fall can cause a person to ache in places which were not directly injured.

When we fall, the muscles in the opposite or balancing side of the body go into spasm to try to balance and prevent the fall. This intense activity of the muscles causes them to ache as pain producing substances are released.

Rest, hot water fomentation to the affected areas and a short course of pain killers preferably paracetamol will help. If the pain does not reduce with this, and/ or if you do have any condition causing weak bones like osteoporosis or are on oral steroids for any reason, do contact your doctor for further evaluation to rule out sprains or fractures or any internal bleeding into the joint space.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
