What Causes Swelling In The Hand Of A Patient Diagnosed With COPD And Congestive Heart Failure?

My 91 year old father suffered a mild stroke 5 or 6 yrs ago. It left his left side weak but other than that no other problems. Recently he has had swelling in his left hand. Can not even move his ring. It goes up to his wrist. He also has COPD and congestive heart failure. What can the swelling be caused by? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing.

I can understand your concern and would try to help you in the best possible way. Your father's hand swelling may be due to congestive heart failure. However in CHF the swelling begins from the legs but in your father's case the left hand is weak due to stroke and is not being used that much.

However other causes of swelling also need to be ruled out like protein deficiency, renal dysfunction, any blood vessel blockade and any other cause.

I Suggest you consult a doctor who may investigate him for the causes of swelling and formulate a management plan for him which may include medications, physical therapy and other therapies.
