Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had cut my foot open with an ax last Friday from 7/2/17. I had hit a vein and it was a clean cut. Say the meaty part of the inner foot. Where your ankle protrudes. I have wide feet not skinny long feet so I didn t hit a bone or anything. But below that at an angle. But it s been ever since that Friday I ve had this and Ive started walking on it and i don t know if that s bad. I know I m supposed to elevate it and I am. It has also been swollen etc. last night I had gone to a local baseball game and I wore slippers there so it wouldn t put pressure on that foot. I wore an athletic sock there with a bandaid over the gash and it seemed fine. I had been walking on it a lot and it didn t really hurt. But now I ve noticed purple/blue areas all over my foot. Not huge and extreme. But patches of purple and such. Idk if it was circulation problems from the sock being tight and my foot being swollen or if it s an infection in my blood from me cutting the vein or if it s a blood clot. I can t say I have pain but there are little moments of pain for only a second but I assume that s because I ve been walking on it all night and it s only been a short time since I laid it open. But I just want to be sure. - Matthew.
Since you have sustained soft tissue injury to your foot, due to an axe, there is a good possibility of developing local bacterial infection, swelling, pain and skin discoloration. You should give complete rest to the foot till complete wound healing. If possible, please use a 'Walker', and be ambulant using your good foot. Keep the injured foot in a raised position while being seated to reduce swelling. You will have to dress the wound with any good antibiotic ointment like metrogyl gel. Please consult a General Surgeon and after examination, depending on the degree of inflammation, he can prescribe antibiotics.
