What Causes Swelling In Lower Jaw And Neck Despite Taking Tylenol And Aspirin?

Last thursday i was eating and the back half of one of my jaw teeth broke off, i've had this tooth filled for about 35 years, the feeling appears to be still in tack, but it became extremely sensitive for a couple of days an then stopped. saturday it started bothering me again with severe pain so i took six tylenol and four full strength aspirin, and that stopped the pain for about five hours so i took the same amount again and throughout the night, come sunday my lower jaw and part of my neck was swollen and i had severe pail, so i went to the emergency room, they done some blood work, gave me a MRI and a shot of 4 morphine, that did not have any effect, so they gave me 2 dililaded and that just took the edge off. The results of my labs showed a elevation in white blood cells, so they sai i had an abscess and gave me a bolis of clindamycin and a 2two prescriptions of clindamycin 300mg 30 caps to take every eight hours, and norco 5/325 to take ever four hours for pain. So when i got home i started taking the meds right away, The pain medicine does not help at all so i am still taking 6 to8 tylenol and 5 to 6 aspiren every 5 to 6 hrs. I need to know how long before the antibiotic works it's been 3 days and the swelling has gotten worse, it has got the whole side of my face swollen all the way up to the bottom of my ear, i cand stand to touch because of the pain and a couple of times i've taken the 7 to 8 tylenol i started taking 6 ibuprofen i had to through up. so i need to know i should do. My mouth want open only about half an inch and i have to put each pill in there one at a time a use a straw to drink water, when i try to open my mouth it's very painful in my jaw. jeff

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain FIRSTLY I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU NEED A "DENTIST" more specifically an ENDODONTIST.

As per your complain it seems that due to tooth breakage there is inflammation of the nerves as the tooth when broken must have exposed the pulp which is central portion of tooth and contains nerves and blood vessels and inflammation of nerves can lead to pain and swelling.

As the tooth is broken it must be leading to infection in the tooth which is extending from the pulp to the root canals and leading to pus formation near the root tips of the tooth and when the pus has no escape way it accumulates in the soft tissues around that area causing swelling..

Due to pressure created by pus there is severe pain and pain does not subsides until pus is drained although you take antibiotics and painkillers.

I would suggest you to consult an endodontist and get evaluated clinically as well as x rays will be taken to find out whether tooth needs to be extracted or can be saved..

If it can be saved ROOT CANAL TREATMENT FOLLOWED BY CAPPING OF TOOTH can help followed by antibiotics and painkillers.

You should immediately consult the doctor as delay can keep progressing the infection leading to CELLULITIS AND SPACE INFECTIONS which are more severe complications.

Hope you get well soon..
