What Causes Swelling And Pain Under The Tongue With Cold?

I have a swollen under tongue and in the past few days my geographic tongue has caused me unbearable pain and is very red. I m currently suffering from a common cold I just wondered whether these issues were linked. I also seem to have a feeling of a bladder infection as when I wee I feel like there s more still to come, however this just could be because my stomach muscles are in pain from coughing. HELP

Hello,

I can understand your concern. In your case, geographic tongue, swelling under tongue, common cold and bladder infection are all different problems and none of them seems to be related to the other.

Regarding geographic tongue, the burning sensation and pain in the tongue are not very common in the situation, though some patients experience these symptoms. As geographic tongue has no treatment, only symptomatic treatment can be advised for relief till the episode is over. You can apply local Benzocaine gel (Mucopain) over the depappilated or burning areas and can take OTC analgesics such as Acetaminophen 500 mg or Ibuprofen 400 mg for relief in pain.

The swelling under the tongue can be due to injury to the area or presence of mucocele or cyst in the area or disorder with the lingual salivary gland. If it is due to injury, it will heal in a week. If it does not heal, then a dentist should be consulted for clinical examination of the swelling and investigations like x-ray for diagnosis. Treatment can be advised after the diagnosis.

For the common cold, you can take Levocetrizine 5 mg (Levocet) once a day for 5 days and can do stream inhalation, salt water gargles, use OTC decongestants etc.

For the bladder infection, you can take antibiotic such as Levofloxacin 500 mg (Levoflox 500) once a day for 5 days or consult a physician for physical examination and urine test.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
