What Causes Swelling And Pain On The Top Of The Mouth?

The roof of my mouth is swollen and painful on the right side only. Seems worse when my head is down on a pillow. Went to the dentist today - no sign on needing a root canal at this point. Said one of my problems may be food getting lodged between back two teeth - showed me different flossing technique and told me to rinse with salt water. Game me prescription for an antibiotic. Still really painful and irritating at night. Could all of this be from gum irritation?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand..

As per your complain swelling over the right side of roof of mouth along with severe pain especially during night is commonly seen in case of dental abscess and when there is infection in tooth leading to formation of pus below the root tips of the tooth the pus puts pressure over the nerves causing pain as well as when you lie down due to posture there is more hydrostatic pressure generated and there is severe pain..
There is a possibility that the diagnosis is missed in the x ray and you can get another x ray done with changed angulation..
You can also consult an Endodontist and get evaluated and thorough clinical evaluation along with x-ray can be diagnostic..
As of now along with antibiotics you should also take higher painkillers like Tramadol..
You can also revert me back with an x ray and ask a question by clicking on my profile..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
