What Causes Swelling And Muscle Spasms In Leg?

Father started out with pain in foot Sunday night, he thought it was gout, tnight before he was going to bed he showed me his leg and from his knee down to foot is swollen and has a slight shade of purple, i can also see his inner thigh muscle spaziming. He refuses to go to hospital tnight, any help would be great

Hi,
Since you have not mentioned any history of trauma i take it for granted that it is non traumatic. Without trauma , such soft tissue swelling(from knee to ankle)with purplish discolouration needs to be evaluated.
There is a condition DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in which there is a possibility of purplish discolouration with swelling (PHLEGMASIA CERULA DOLENS).which needs to be ruled out.
Please keep the limb elevated with constant movement of foot and ankle.Visit a doctor as soon as possible and if needed please get a doppler scan done.
Any delay in visiting a doctor is not adviced.
