What Causes Swelling And Bruising Of Neck And Spine Post Trauma?

I fell down a hill and smacked my head two or three times. I slept that night waking up every hour and then went to the hospital the next day. They said something about bruising and swelling in my neck and spine, which both REALLY hurt. Especially my back roght now, as my neck feels a little better over these past 4 days. They said i had a concussion as well and i am out of class all week because the lights and such hurt my brain. But my neck and back are my biggest concerns because i have a neck brace and i cant turn my neck too far and my back felt like it was getting better but now it feels worse... Now what? Help!

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
hi,

thank-you for providing the brief history of you.

a thorough neuromuscular assessment is advised.

As the neck and back injuries are common after a fall from a hill and shouldn't be ignored. Also to understand that you may need an MRI of the cervical and lumbar spine to check the extent of the soft tissue Injury. Apparently I think you have not injured any nerve so your hand function and elg function are normal.

Also, post removal of the brace you may need to undergo physical therapy for your neck. Avoid undergoing chiropract therapy for time being as the neck is too weak to handle the therapy.

physical therapy will help you strengthen the muscles slow and gradually. Once the therapist finds the strength in the muscle is regaining he may ask you to undergo a thorough clinical neuromuscular assessment which he will perform.

Also, until your muscle becomes stronger try to avoid heavy physical exertion. avoid gym and sports too.

In my clinical practice I have seen cases with falls and injuring both the cervical and lumbar spine at one time. The recovery is slow but with physical therapy the patients recover faster the muscle property is maintained with physical therapy.
