What Causes Swelling And Bruising Of Knee Along With Severe Pain?

My dog ran past me on 26th Jan and hit my knee sideways. It felt as though the top of my leg went onway and the bottom went the other. My knee swelled up and I couldn t walk properly on it for a few days. There was no noticeable bruising. The first day it couldn t handle any pressure/weight on it. (Before this I had been getting pain - sort of a cramping, tightening in my calf for about a month and had been taking magnesium complex which helped.) When my knee stopped hurting I notice my calf was painful and felt swollen, especially when I first stood up after sitting for even a short time it felt tight. This morning I noticed my ankle was noticeably swollen and it seems to be getting worse. My calf is sore and walking is not easing it. Any ideas? This is my left leg. I injured this knee when I came off a ladder a few years ago. I had an x-ray, the ER & my GP said they didn t think I had torn my anterior cruciate ligament but a physio I went to said he thought I might have. I didn t have treatment for it apart from keeping off it for a couple of weeks, using crutches. December 2014 I had a total hip replacement in my right hip due to avascular necrosis. My left hip is OK. I am a 47years old female.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have swelling and severe pain in knee. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like baker's cyst , gout , brusitis or broken bone . I would suggest you to give proper rest to your knee , apply warm compresses on it , keep your knee stabilize, keep your leg elevated while lying down and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . Consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI or physical examination . Doctor may give plaster , prescribe muscle relaxant along with anti inflammatory and re commend physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgical excision .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
