General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank you for your question.
There are many causes for his swelling. It could be the salt or problems with his liver or kidneys. It could be that the vessels in his legs are not working to return the blood to the heart effectively (vascular insufficiency). He really needs to see his doctor to determine the cause. Stopping the salt and alcohol would be very helpful to his long term health.
