What Causes Sudden Rise In Blood Sugar Level While Suffering From Pneumonia?

My mother has diabetes and has been recently hospitalized for pneumonia & dehydration. When she went in her sugar level was low at 43 but after testing today it has jumped up to a high of 326. Is this a dangerous level and if so how dangerous? And how can it go up so high under doctor s care?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear welcome to HealthcareMagic Regarding your mother very high blood sugar from very low level with a history of pneumonia I am suggesting that this is definitely due to poor glycemic control which can arise from the following

Poor compliance to diabetic drugs
Insulin resistance
Pancreatic carcinoma

In view of this please see a endocrinologist for further clinical assessment and expert management
Regarding her pneumonia please let let take some antibiotics and her physician for follow up
I hope this helps
