What Causes Sudden Pain In The Ear Of A 11 Year Old?

my son is 11 yrs old, weighs approx 71 lbs, and is in general good health. 5 weeks ago he complained of sudden pain in the left ear. Doc at the walk in clinic diagnosed as ear inf and prescribed amoxycillin. 3 days later with no change, the med were changed to Clarithromycin which he took fo 10 days. Still pain continued, and acute hearing developed - he was on painkillers when the pain was intense, and hence we did not notice any fever. we took him to the children's hospital emergency where they did a CT and said all was fine, incl sinuses were clear. Our family doc checked him and said fluid in the middle ear, so prescibed cortisone ear drops and nose spray. The following week he saw an ENT specialist who checked his ears and throat and said nothing to do with ENT. Hehas pain on the bone behind his let ear, above the ear and on the front of the ear beside the cheek. Our family doc recommended xrays of the ear and skull which have come back clear. He still gets severe pain periodically and needs to take naproxen or ibuprofen, and can't bear any volume of noise, hence cannot attend school. Today he has a dry cough and we have noticed a painful soft small lump on the bone behind his ear

Pediatrician, Pulmonology 's  Response
Hi.... I have just read through your long history. I Understand your concern. I feel that your kid is going into complications of Middle ear infection or suppurative otitis media.

The Other possibility is that he could be developIng a cholestetoma of the ear. But this might also be unlikely as the scan and x-rays have come as normal.
