What Causes Sudden Lactose Intolerance?

I am an 18yr old female. 168lbs. 5ft 5in. I suddenly became what I think is lactose intolerant in June. However, it is really extreme. The lactose pills do not work either. Yesterday, I had really bad diarrhea with white foamy stuff in it. Is it lactose intolerance, or something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

A sudden and "extreme" onset of lactose intolerance is not common and the fact that you didn't experience a relief of your symptoms with lactose pills rules out this diagnosis.

Although I would need a better description of your symptoms, from your description it sound like steatorrhea, which is basically fats in the stool, which is caused by an array of factors, but more commonly from diet changes, malabsorption and/or intestinal infections. For the diagnosis, you would need a complete check up and a fuller picture of your symptoms, so I recommend you see a doctor at your earliest convenience.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you good health and all the best.

Regards,
Dr. Ornela Ademovi
