Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Over the holiday break, I noticed my 67 year old mother began to stutter when she got upset at the grandchildren. According to other family members, they have witnessed this as well and it only occurs when she becomes extremely upset or overwhelmed. Apparently it has been happening for about five years now. Is this a sign of some other medical condition? Thanks, Anne
Hello and thank you for your question. It is unusual for stuttering to begin at that age. It would be good for her to see her doctor for an exam. They may want to do an imaging test like an MRI of her brain to make sure that everything is okay. If it is happening frequently then her doctor may want to talk to her about treating her anxiety that is triggering the stuttering. Sometimes working with a speech therapist can help people overcome the stuttering. Regards
