What Causes Stomach Gas And Blood In Stool When Suffering From Diverticulosis?

My husband (54 yr old,185 lb, managed high bp, 5 mg lisinopril, diagnosed w diverticulosis 5 years ago with mild flare ups about every 1 1/2 yrs managed w cipro, pain would go away, had hernia surgery his L side (?inguanal) back in approx 1996, he never felt like the surgery fixed it, has discomfort on and off since surgery) he is a builder and very healthy and energetic. Ok, a few days ago he started having pains all across his lower abdomen, he thought it was diverticulitis, he started taking the cipro according to the directions, we always have some on hand. The pain started getting worse, he went to our dr. He said it wasn t diverticulitis, it was his hernia judging on where he poked and Tim had pain. He said the cipro was causing the discomfort. Ok, great, we thought, so Tim got out his hernia truss, put it on and in 5 mins he had no more pain, now today he has pain like a band across lower abdomen, he thinks he might be constipated since he hasn t gone much at all in the past 2 days. I m worried , he s in a fair amount of pain, should we call our dr? Or should I go get some colace? He says it feels like severe gas pains. He never had blood or mucus in his stool, no fever, what is your opinion?

Hi,Dear,Thanks for your query to HCM.
Dear I read your query and reviewed it with context to your query facts.
I understood your health concerns and feel Concerned about them.

Based on the facts of your query, you seem to suffer from-
Recurrent Hernia- with adhesive obstruction.
Use of hernia truss seems to have relieved pains partially initially and has lead to the complaints of yours where you have stomach pains with severe gas pains from partial adhesive obstruction of the old operated hernia in 1996.
No blood and mucus in stools rules out Diverticulosis with Colitis as the cause of this severe gas pains in your case, though you had earlier had these diverticulitis attacks.
Remedy-
You should go to ER Surgeon, and get the assessment with hospitalisation and should treat the partial adhesive intestinal obstruction with Recurrence of the inguinal hernia.
USG Of the inguinal area with X-ray abdomen would confirm the diagnosis. And your surgeon would plan the treatment accordingly after the investigation.

Hope this reply would help you to plan further treatment with your family and specialist doctors there.

Welcome for any further query in this regard.

Good Day!!
